You’re the queen of crunches, you eat well and you think you drink enough water. Yet you notice that the skin on your belly is becoming soft and saggy, with a tendency to droop. What causes this skin laxity? And, more broadly, are there solutions to tighten the skin on your belly?
Sommaire
Why does belly skin become loose?
Loose skin around the belly is a fairly common concern for women. The abdominal area is particularly prone to skin laxity, which can manifest in several ways: a soft feel, a crepey texture, or a drooping appearance.
This skin laxity can have several causes. When it comes to the belly, the most common ones are as follows.
1- Hormonal changes
Hormones play an essential role in skin quality – its resilience, firmness and suppleness. Female sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) also help maintain constant hydration. But with the onset of menopause, the gradual decline of these hormones leads to dryness and skin sagging. The same applies right after childbirth, when female hormones drop sharply.
2- Age
Age is one of the main culprits behind skin deterioration. The ageing process triggers a series of changes that are particularly harsh on the dermis:
- Reduction in collagen fibres
- Decrease in elastin fibres
- Breakdown of hyaluronic acid naturally produced by the body (which is involved in skin hydration)
- Loss of fat and muscle mass (which support the skin)
Add to this the effect of gravity: skin naturally tends to sag over time.
3- Pregnancy
Pregnancy is one of the main reasons for loss of abdominal firmness. The tension placed on the belly skin is intense and builds over several months. It’s no surprise, then, that after giving birth the belly skin is soft and stretched, and that post-pregnancy belly cellulite may have appeared.
4- Weight fluctuations
Rapid and significant weight loss can affect the tone of belly skin. Fat “supports” the skin – it acts as the “binding layer” between muscle and dermis. If it disappears too quickly, there’s a strong chance the belly will become flabby, even when you were hoping to regain firmness. It’s even worse when weight is repeatedly gained and lost (the notorious “yo-yo” effect): the dermis, subjected to alternating tension and distension, can become seriously damaged.
5- Other factors contributing to a sagging belly
Other factors can contribute to loose belly skin:
- Excessive sun exposure: UV rays cause cellular damage, particularly to fibroblasts, which are involved in skin suppleness and resilience.
- Alcohol and/or tobacco consumption: alcohol dehydrates the skin, while tobacco releases free radicals that accelerate skin ageing. Both are harmful and will speed up the skin-sagging process.
- Stress: chronic stress affects skin firmness, driven by elevated blood cortisol levels, which interfere with collagen and elastin production.
- Poor diet: if your diet is low in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, fibre, vitamins and minerals, your skin will deteriorate and lose its elasticity.
- Genetics: hereditary factors can play a role in skin laxity.
- Poor blood circulation: good microcirculation means good tissue oxygenation. The opposite leads to skin sagging, as skin cells don’t receive all the elements (oxygen, water, nutrients) they need to function properly.
Can you tighten belly skin without surgery?
Surgery is not a given, especially if the belly skin is not too loose. It should only be considered as a last resort and on medical advice. That said, it may be an option if:
- The belly has a very localised and stubborn fat deposit, despite strict diet and lifestyle measures over several months
- After significant weight loss, when an excess of loose skin appears and hangs without regaining any tone
- If abdominal muscle separation occurs – known as diastasis recti
In these specific cases, an abdominoplasty (removal of excess skin) and/or liposuction (removal of abdominal fat) may be considered.
In all other cases, exercise, a balanced diet and targeted skincare should help tighten belly skin and restore a degree of firmness.
It’s worth noting that non-invasive techniques now exist to address belly sagging. Fractional laser, radiofrequency, injections and ultrasound are all non-surgical methods used today to stimulate collagen synthesis or restore skin tension.
Which sports should you practise to tighten belly skin?
1- Gentle sports
If you prefer low-impact activities, or if you’ve recently given birth, many sports can help you tighten and tone your belly skin. The key is to combine abdominal strengthening – including the deep core muscles – with improved microcirculation in the belly area. Recommended activities include:
- Swimming with fins: not only will you achieve a more toned belly, but you can also say goodbye to flabby buttocks and flabby thighs! Swimming engages your abdominal muscles and gently tightens the skin on your belly.
- Nordic walking: this activity engages all the muscle chains in the body. A bonus: the poles encourage the upper body muscles – including those of the abdomen – to work harder. Done in a group, Nordic walking is even more effective – you cover the kilometres while chatting away, what could be better!
- Yoga: certain yoga poses (cobra, boat, cat, tiger) gently strengthen the core and are very effective for tightening belly skin. Why? Not only because they engage all the abdominal muscles, but also because they involve deep breathing, which helps oxygenate the tissues.
2- High-intensity sports
These activities are not recommended for women who have recently given birth. For everyone else: if you have energy to burn and want to sculpt a rock-solid stomach, these sports are a great choice!
- Pole dance: why not? This discipline, combining dance and acrobatic moves around a vertical pole, is excellent for deep muscle toning and firming belly skin. Fun and sensual, pole dance also helps you feel more confident and reconnect with your femininity!
- Weight training: go big or go home! If you want to tighten your belly skin and define your abs, there’s one answer: weight training! At home or in the gym, alone or with a coach – all options are open to you.
- HIIT: if your goal is to see results – fast – you’ll need to put in the effort. HIIT is an intense workout based on interval training and combining all kinds of high-intensity exercises. Those who practise it are unanimous about its toning effects.
What are the natural solutions for tightening belly skin?
1- Diet
Tightening belly skin also comes down to a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and nutrients that support healthy skin. Fill your plate with:
- Vitamins:
- A: offal, cheese, eggs
- B3: oily fish, peanuts, poultry, calf’s liver
- B5: offal, cheeses, mushrooms, oily fish
- C: citrus fruits, green vegetables, peppers, kiwi, blackcurrants
- E: wheat germ, sunflower and grape seed oils, nuts, avocado
- Trace elements:
- Selenium: seafood, nuts, wholegrains, garlic
- Beta-carotene: carrots, melon, sweet potato, spinach, pumpkin
- Silicon: wholegrains, dehydrated foods
- Copper: cocoa, seafood, liver, nuts
- Manganese: oat flakes, bulgur wheat, pineapple, pine nuts
- Zinc: oysters, cheeses, cocoa, rye bread, meat
- Isoflavones: particularly interesting if you are approaching menopause (declining oestrogen levels), but should be limited if you have a history of hormone-dependent cancers (breast, uterus, endometrium) and avoided if you are breastfeeding. You’ll find them in soy, certain citrus fruits and flaxseeds.
- Antioxidants: since free radicals are harmful to the skin, it’s important to eat foods rich in antioxidants such as certain fruits (pomegranate, red berries, prunes), berries (goji, açaí, elderberry, cranberry), spices (cumin, saffron, ginger, turmeric), aromatic herbs (savory, oregano, mint, thyme) and chia seeds.
In addition:
- Make sure to chew well and eat slowly, to aid digestion and absorb all the benefits of your food.
- Watch your salt intake, which has multiple effects on the body, including water retention and impaired blood circulation. Not ideal for skin that, when poorly oxygenated, will retain its flabby appearance…
- Don’t skip meals. You’ll be more tempted to snack on foods that are harmful to your skin: sugar, bad fats, junk food and empty calories…
- Avoid foods that tend to bloat your belly, as this creates further tension on the skin. But do make sure you eat enough fibre to keep your digestive system moving.
- Drink water and beneficial drinks, such as green tea. Belly skin needs to be regularly hydrated from within in order to regain its firmness.
2- Natural skincare
Nature can lend a helping hand when it comes to tightening belly skin. Apply natural actives to this area that promote firming and hydration:
- Essential oils: certain essential oils are particularly effective against skin laxity. Create your own lotion using a carrier oil combined with cistus ladanifer, green myrtle, rosemary or rosewood essential oil. Note: if you are breastfeeding, avoid essential oils, as they are not without side effects.
- Natural plant oils: certain oils are particularly effective for tightening belly skin. Opt for argan oil for its anti-ageing properties, evening primrose oil for its regenerating benefits, and borage oil for its firming action.
- Aloe Vera gel: packed with over 80 nutrients, Aloe Vera is deeply hydrating and supports the renewal of fibroblasts, which are responsible for producing skin collagen.
- Rhassoul: this natural mineral clay stimulates microcirculation and improves skin elasticity. Mixed with floral water and applied as a mask to your belly, it helps tighten the skin.
