Castor oil: an alternative against stretch marks?

You already know it: when it comes to stretch marks, natural plant oils are true champions. Emollient, nourishing and regenerating, they help both prevent and treat those little streaks that cause us so much concern. But can castor oil also be effective on stretch marks?

What is castor oil?

It is a plant oil produced by cold-pressing castor plant seeds, a shrub native to tropical regions. The main characteristic of castor oil is that it is not suitable for consumption. Indeed, it contains ricin, a substance that is highly irritating, even toxic when ingested. That said, when applied topically, it offers a range of genuine skin benefits.

What are the benefits of castor oil?

Castor oil can be used for many purposes, its exceptional composition making it a true beauty asset. It is commonly used:

  • to boost the growth of hair, lashes and nails, and to strengthen hair fibres;
  • to soothe all types of pain, including musculoskeletal discomfort, migraines and menstrual cramps;
  • to treat skin concerns (such as acne), thanks to its antimicrobial properties;
  • to reduce water retention and, by extension, aqueous cellulite, by stimulating venous and lymphatic circulation.

But one of its most notable benefits is that it is an exceptional healing agent. It works on several levels:

  • rich in lipids, it prevents moisture loss, keeping the skin well hydrated;
  • anti-inflammatory, it calms inflammation following trauma, whether from a sunburn, a burn, itching or an impact;
  • by stimulating microcirculation, it speeds up the healing process;
  • thanks to its high content of fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, palmitic, stearic, ricinoleic) and vitamin E, it deeply nourishes the skin and supports cellular regeneration.

In light of these effects, it is fair to say that castor oil is genuinely effective on stretch marks. Stretch marks, caused by micro-tears in the skin’s elastic fibres, create subcutaneous micro-trauma. Castor oil works on every level to help restore the skin:

  • it boosts circulation, allowing the blood to deliver the nutrients the skin needs to heal;
  • it nourishes the dermis with essential fatty acids, encouraging the formation of new elastic fibres;
  • it supports the quality of the hydrolipidic film, preventing moisture loss and maintaining skin hydration.

How to use castor oil on stretch marks?

There are several ways to use castor oil as a stretch mark treatment. However, it is worth knowing that it is very thick and viscous, which can make it tricky to work with.

If you wish to use it undiluted, it is best applied as a compress. Simply soak a piece of cotton or fabric in castor oil, apply it to the area of concern (thighs, buttocks, stomach, hips…) and leave it on overnight so the active ingredients can fully absorb.

If you plan to massage your stretch marks with castor oil, it is best to blend it with another plant oil with a lighter, dry and fast-absorbing texture. Good options include macadamia oil, sesame oil or perilla oil.

Finally, to complete your castor oil-based anti-stretch mark routine, you can also use our Stretch Mark Prevention Oil.

Several advantages:

  • alternating natural plant oils allows you to benefit from their different compositions and, in turn, their distinct properties;
  • our oil is in fact an elixir of 5 different plant oilssesame, avocado, sunflower, sweet almond and jojoba;
  • it suits all skin types, addresses all types of stretch marks (white, red, purple, growth-related or pregnancy-related) and absorbs very easily;
  • it is completely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, which is not the case for castor oil (the ricin it contains may be harmful to the foetus).
