If you’re a fan of home skincare, chances are you’ve already reached for green clay. This mineral powder, sourced straight from nature, is a staple in cosmetics — celebrated above all for its purifying properties. But does green clay have other benefits? And could it be particularly effective when it comes to stretch marks?

What is green clay?

It is a soft sedimentary material, highly mineralised, formed through the erosion of various rocks in the Earth’s crust. Its production is straightforward: it is extracted from natural deposits, crushed and ground into a fine powder, then dried at high heat to eliminate any microbiological load. Its colour comes from its mineral content, namely ferric oxides, silica and trace elements (iron, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, among others). It comes in two varieties: illite, suited to combination and oily skin, and montmorillonite, gentler and suitable for all skin types.

Green clay has been used for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes since time immemorial. The Egyptians used it to heal wounds, the Romans turned to it for pain relief and deep injuries, and even during the First World War, doctors recommended it as a gastric dressing to curb dysentery outbreaks. Green clay truly is a treasure trove of benefits!

Green clay’s two main properties are that it is absorbent, acting like a sponge, and adsorptive, meaning it draws toxins to the skin’s surface. It is also highly mineralised, which gives it a wide range of benefits.

  • It regulates sebum and mattifies the skin, which is why it is commonly used as a mask to rebalance sebum production, both on the skin and the scalp;
  • it is detoxifying, making it ideal for acne-prone skin, helping to reduce breakouts, minimise blackheads and tighten the appearance of enlarged pores;
  • it is regenerating and remineralising, supporting the healing process and calming inflammation — it can also be considered an anti-ageing ally;
  • used pure and undiluted, it works as an exfoliant, as its very fine particle size is gentle enough not to weaken the skin during scrubbing;
  • it is decongestant, which is why it is often applied as a poultice to help reduce oedemas and bruises;
  • purifying, it disinfects wounds and absorbs impurities;
  • it is soothing and anti-inflammatory, making it suitable for topical application on burns, sunburn and heat rashes, as well as injuries and rheumatic pain;
  • taken orally, it is used as a gastric dressing and anti-diarrhoeal, purifying the intestinal flora and coating the digestive mucosa.

Is green clay useful for stretch marks?

Absolutely, especially during the inflammatory phase of stretch marks. It can be used to make poultices and body masks, applied directly to coloured stretch marks.

To understand why it works, let’s take a quick look at how stretch marks form. They are micro-tears in the dermis, which occur when the skin is subjected to a significant, rapid and sudden stretch — mainly during growth spurts, pregnancy and the postpartum period, weight fluctuations, or muscle hypertrophy. This is when stretch marks appear:

  • in the inflammatory stage, they are often tinged red or purple (due to increased blood flow), but are not painful;
  • in the scarring stage, new collagen fibres form beneath the skin to replace those that have broken. Stretch marks fade to white and take on a fissured appearance, giving the skin an uneven texture.

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, healing, decongestant and remineralising properties, green clay can soothe and reduce the appearance of stretch marks from the moment they appear:

  • it helps speed up their fading;
  • it calms localised inflammation and decongests the tissues;
  • it supports deep skin regeneration, with its minerals helping to boost collagen synthesis.

It can be used on its own, mixed with a little water. It then forms a paste, to be applied as a poultice over the stretch marks. To enhance the effect, you can place a compress or clean cloth on top and leave it to work for a while, regularly re-moistening the fabric.

That said, combining ingredients is where the real magic happens! The green clay anti-stretch mark mask can be enriched with other ingredients. Simply mix 3 tbsp of green clay with a little water until you get a smooth paste. Then add 1 tbsp of your chosen natural vegetable oil (rosehip, argan, sweet almond) and 5 drops of true lavender, cistus ladanifer or rosemary verbenone essential oil — all plants known for their healing properties. The resulting paste can be applied to all stretch marks (hips, stomach, bust or thighs), left on for half an hour, then rinsed off with clean water. A word of caution: this recipe is not suitable for pregnant women, due to the presence of essential oils.

Are there other natural remedies for stretch marks?

Other natural ingredients can be used on stretch marks:

  • Vegetable oils and plant butters, used both as a preventive and corrective measure, help nourish the skin, maintain optimal hydration and restore suppleness and elasticity;
  • Aloe Vera gel, packed with water and nutrients (over 80!), is an exceptional moisturiser that helps prevent stretch marks from forming and visibly reduces existing ones;
  • Honey, nature’s liquid gold, is widely used in clinical settings for its healing properties and can also be incorporated into DIY anti-stretch mark treatments at home;
  • Black soap, provided it is artisanal, makes an ideal gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells, buff and massage the skin softly, and support its regeneration;
  • Baking soda of pharmaceutical grade, very finely milled, also makes an excellent scrub for stretch marks.

And for anyone looking for reliable, clean-formula products enriched with natural actives, our Stretch Marks range is the perfect choice.

  • Our Stretch Mark Prevention Oil, a blend of 5 vegetable oils (including healing avocado and protective jojoba), helps prevent stretch marks from forming by giving the skin exceptional suppleness;
  • our Anti-Stretch Mark Serum, a concentrated hydration boost, delivers the moisture the skin needs to stay resilient;
