What are the benefits of dandelion?

You all know this plant, blooming in fields and lawns as soon as the warmer days arrive. Dandelion, often dismissed as a weed by gardeners, is actually a treasure trove of health benefits. Read on to find out what they are…

What is dandelion?

We should really talk about dandelions in the plural, as the term refers to a very large number of plants with yellow flowers. The “true” dandelions are those belonging to the genus Taraxacum and are distinguished by:

  • their hollow stem;
  • their deeply toothed leaves (hence the alternative name Lion’s Tooth);
  • their latex (a white, sticky substance that seeps from the stems when cut);
  • their fruits (achenes — small seeds topped with a silky tuft that we love to scatter by blowing on them).

Dandelion has been used since Antiquity, both for healing and for eating. The Greeks used its latex to soothe eye irritations, while the Persians ate it, comparing it to chicory. It seems this plant, so often dismissed as a weed, has far more to offer than meets the eye…

Benefit no1 of dandelion: a nutritional powerhouse

With dandelion, everything is edible!

  • The flower buds can be preserved in vinegar and eaten like capers.
  • The flowers are used in a wide variety of preparations, including Cramaillotte, a delicious sweet jelly typical of Burgundy, or Dandelion Wine, a kind of English brew made with water, honey, yeast and dandelion flowers.
  • The leaves are highly regarded in gastronomy, despite their slightly bitter taste. They are somewhat reminiscent of rocket.
  • The roots, less well known, are equally edible. In Japan they are prized and enjoyed stir-fried in soy sauce.

But beyond its culinary qualities, dandelion is best known for its nutritional benefits:

  • the leaves are packed with nutrients, including an exceptional content of provitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E, making them a top antioxidant food. This antioxidant power is further boosted by the presence of polyphenols, chemical compounds that fight free radicals and help protect against inflammation and premature ageing;
  • they also contain vitamin K, essential for healthy blood clotting;
  • they are also rich in minerals, including potassium, which helps combat water retention, magnesium and iron to help fight fatigue, as well as calcium and phosphorus for bone health;
  • the flowers, like the leaves, contain polyphenols and antioxidant phenolic acids.

All in all, dandelion is a genuine health food that deserves far more recognition (and a regular place on our plates).

Benefit no2: a powerful diuretic

There’s a reason dandelion is sometimes nicknamed “wet-the-bed” in folk tradition! It is in fact a potent diuretic. It stimulates the elimination of water by the kidneys and is also used to help with water retention, urinary tract infections and to help prevent the formation of kidney stones. This is largely due to its high potassium content, which naturally promotes diuresis. That said, its use should be approached with caution in cases of established kidney insufficiency or renal colic, and should always be guided by a healthcare professional. It is also worth noting that this diuretic action has positive effects on rheumatism and osteoarthritis, which are caused by a build-up of uric acid salts in the tendons and cartilage.

Benefit no3: a liver detoxifier

Another virtue of dandelion: it is choleretic (it stimulates bile secretion by the liver) and cholagogue (it promotes the emptying of the gallbladder). In practical terms, what does this mean? Simply that it is highly recommended in cases of sluggish digestion, especially after a period of dietary excess. In short, if you’re looking for a detox after a few indulgent days (for example, after the festive season), dandelion is a true ally. It will help you regain digestive comfort and a general sense of wellbeing.

Benefit no4: a digestive aid

Its positive action on liver function is not the only way dandelion supports digestion. The plant also stimulates salivary and gastric secretions (partly thanks to taraxacin, the chemical compound responsible for its bitter taste), reduces bloating and supports healthy bowel transit (its fibres are well known for their gentle laxative effect). Its richness in minerals and inulin (a fibre found in particularly high concentrations in dandelion roots) also helps nourish the microbiome (prebiotic action). Dandelion therefore supports the entire digestive system and promotes gut wellbeing.

Benefit no5: a positive effect on blood sugar and cholesterol

Staying in the digestive sphere: dandelion may inhibit the absorption of carbohydrates by the body and, in doing so, help lower blood sugar levels. This action may be explained by the various compounds found in the plant, including luteolin, terpenes, acids (chicoric, chlorogenic) and the taraxacin mentioned above. This hypoglycaemic effect could be of interest in the management of diabetes, as well as for slimming purposes. Dandelion also offers another bonus: it is rich in phytosterols, natural compounds known to lower blood cholesterol by reducing the intestinal absorption of fats. Dandelion is therefore a natural cholesterol-lowering plant.

How to make the most of dandelion’s benefits?

There are two ways: either eat dandelion in its natural form, or opt for food supplements made from dandelion flowers, leaves and/or roots.

For the first option, you can perfectly well pick your own dandelions in the wild. Choose areas with low pollution, ideally deep in the countryside. Bear in mind that the best time to harvest the leaves and roots is spring, before flowering. As for the flowers, you can pick them young (as buds) or fully open (to garnish salads or brew homemade herbal teas).

The second option means choosing your food supplements carefully. The best way to do this is to check the formula: your capsules or tablets should be properly dosed with dandelion to deliver all these benefits.   • Garcinia cambogia, raspberry ketones and pineapple, renowned for their lipolytic action, for an effective fat-burning effect;
  • ascophyllum, a seaweed recognised for its ability to limit fat storage in the body and support the maintenance of a healthy weight;
  • artichoke, fennel and dandelion, for their positive action on digestion, liver sluggishness and bloating.
