An all-too-familiar end-of-day annoyance: you find yourself undoing the top button of your trousers, struggling with a bloating – more or less unexplained – of your abdominal wall. Your usually flat stomach swells up for no apparent reason, leaving you wondering why. What if this discomfort were actually linked to water retention localised in your belly?

Water retention in the belly – the “balloon” effect

La Water retention is a fairly common condition, though an uncomfortable one. The body is made up of around 70% water: two thirds are stored within the body’s cells, while the remaining third circulates through the body, in the blood (plasma) or between cells. Sometimes, however, this circulation breaks down and fluid seeps into the tissues, where it becomes trapped. The result is swelling, known as oedema. And while water retention typically concentrates in the thighs, legs and ankles, other parts of the body can also be affected: hands, face, and even the belly.

Abdominal water retention is relatively rare, but it does exist. It can occur:

  • In the premenstrual phase, when women often experience bloating sensations and sometimes even sudden, significant weight gain (symptoms of premenstrual syndrome)
  • During pregnancy
  • During menopause
  • With certain medical treatments, particularly corticosteroid-based therapies, hormonal treatments (HRT, the pill) and antihypertensives
  • In the case of a pathological condition – cardiac, renal or vascular

Beyond the unflattering appearance of a puffed-up belly, the discomfort it brings is very real. You feel uncomfortable in your own skin, bloated and constricted by your clothes… Not to mention the loss of control over your body, since these sudden bouts of swelling can be hard to explain.

Water retention in the belly: how to de-bloat quickly?

Drastic problems call for effective solutions! To reduce water retention in the belly and get back to a flatter stomach, it’s all about adopting a few healthy lifestyle habits.

Take a closer look at your diet

Water retention in the belly is too often confused with bloating. But the two are not the same – water retention is not a digestive issue! That said, it’s worth paying attention to your eating habits: cut back on salt (watch out for cured meats, ready meals and hard cheeses), favour nuts and wholegrains (proteins that help blood vessels draw water back out of the tissues), and include draining foods in your diet (pineapple, grapefruit, artichoke, celery, asparagus) or foods rich in potassium (wheat germ, legumes, dried fruits, avocado, banana).

Fight water retention with water!

It bears repeating: staying hydrated is essential for your body to function properly. Dehydrating yourself will only make water retention worse. Drink plenty of water, and also herbal diuretic drinks, such as our detox slimming tea and consider draining cures based on green tea (which helps strengthen blood vessels).

Put healthy lifestyle habits in place

Avoid heat, which causes vascular dilation and encourages water retention. Steer clear of clothing that compresses your belly and opt for comfort instead. Don’t stay in a static position for hours on end – moving around, taking a few steps and stretching will help get your venous and arterial circulation going again. More broadly, getting back into regular physical activity will help strengthen your vascular tone and release water stored in the abdominal tissues.

Treat your belly to a cupping massage

Regular massages with our oil and cupping cup can also help ease abdominal water retention. Just 3 minutes of circular cupping movements will encourage your body to drain the fluid held in the tissues. Your belly, relieved of excess water, will look and feel flatter and more toned.
