That’s it — no more letting things slide, it’s time to take care of yourself! A worthy resolution… Yet taking back control of your body isn’t always easy. What exactly should you do? Where do you start? Is a diet really the answer? We tell you everything, with 6 essential tips to finally feel your best.
Tip no1 for taking back control of your body: walk every day
You know it perfectly well, yet you don’t do it — and that’s a mistake. A daily walk helps you maintain your ideal weight, lower your blood pressure, blood sugar and bad cholesterol, reduce stress, extend your life expectancy and feel better in your head. All that! OK, but how do you actually do it?
If you use public transport, get off two stops early and walk the rest of the way
- Walk to pick up your bread (or your kids)
- Add an extra outing per day with your dog
- Take the stairs instead of the lift
- Take your phone calls while walking
See? It’s not that hard!
Tip no2: eat the rainbow
People don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables and struggle to reach the recommended 5 portions a day. Yet we know these are health foods, packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals that the body needs. What if you decided to bring more colour to your plate? The colours of fruit and vegetables signal the presence of essential micronutrients. By building colourful meals, you balance your diet, enjoy the benefits of plant foods and give yourself the best chance of seeing positive changes in your body over time. Weight loss, reduced cellulite, improved tone, better digestion, more radiant skin… and more!
Tip no3: find a sport you actually enjoy
Exercise is essential for taking back control of your body. But it’s often seen as a tiring, burdensome obligation. Perhaps that’s because you haven’t found the right fit yet… To change the way you think about sport:
- finally choose a sport you genuinely enjoy, whatever it may be, and don’t let trends dictate your tastes;
- block out a dedicated slot for exercise every week and never skip it;
- train regularly, and make it enjoyable;
- don’t exercise to lose weight, but because you love it;
savour the physical sensations that come with exercise, and the satisfying tiredness once your session is done.
Tip no4: eat your meals in peace
Eating on the go or in front of screens is not recommended. Eating should be a mindful act — not only to truly savour what you’re eating, but also to tune in to your hunger and fullness cues. To take back control of your body, it’s time to reclaim your mealtimes:
- eat your meals in a calm setting, away from your computer or the TV, seated;
- put your fork down between each bite;
- take the time to chew — you’ll enjoy the flavours more and digest better;
- eat slowly — it takes the brain around 20 minutes to receive fullness signals.
Tip no5: de-stress
Did you know that stress can cause weight gain? On top of wearing you out and dragging down your mood, it raises your cortisol levels. And cortisol has a direct impact on your body, as it promotes insulin secretion and, ultimately, fat storage. To take back control of your body, it’s essential to carve out moments of relaxation. That might mean reading, colouring, yoga or a catch-up call with a friend. The key: let go. Not only will you naturally lower your cortisol levels (with positive effects on your figure), but you’ll feel better in your head too — more motivation, sharper focus, fewer dark thoughts.
