You want to start a proper anti-cellulite routine and, during your research, you came across a rather unusual brush. What exactly is an anti-cellulite brush? To find out everything about this accessory and discover the benefits of lymphatic brushing, here is a handy Q&A!

What is an anti-cellulite brush?

An anti-cellulite brush is a handheld brush, of varying sizes, featuring:

  • A handle or grip
  • Bristles made from synthetic or natural fibres (animal hair, or plant-based fibres such as sisal, loofah or tampico)
  • Optionally, softer nodules, often made of silicone
  • It is primarily used for anti-cellulite brushing.

The firmness of the brush bristles will depend on personal preference, as well as individual experience with anti-cellulite brushing. It is recommended to start this body treatment with relatively soft bristles, then gradually move on to a firmer brush for more vigorous sessions.

Finally, caring for an anti-cellulite brush couldn’t be simpler: just wash it two to three times a month with soap and water, then leave it to air dry.

1- Principle and effectiveness

It is in fact a dry brushing technique, performed following a very specific method. Anti-cellulite brushing aims to gently stimulate the subcutaneous veno-lymphatic network. What does that have to do with cellulite, you ask? Great question!

The causes of cellulite are many: hormonal fluctuations, genetics, poor lifestyle habits… But in many cases, the appearance of cellulite is worsened by veno-lymphatic insufficiency. In such cases, porous blood vessels allow some of the water they carry to leak into surrounding tissues, causing water retention (and, by extension, aqueous cellulite). The lymphatic vessels, meanwhile, are responsible for transporting toxins and waste to the lymph nodes, which then eliminate them. But when lymphatic circulation is impaired, toxins build up in the tissues, leading to unsightly cellulite.

Cellulite also worsens with age, as skin tone deteriorates: reduced production of collagen (skin firmness), elastin (dermal suppleness) and hyaluronic acid (loss of hydration). This sagging accentuates the dimpled appearance of cellulite, as well as the fibrosis typical of deep-set cellulite.

This is where anti-cellulite brushing comes in. By brushing the skin with an anti-cellulite brush, following a precise technique, you target two of the key contributing factors of cellulite:

  • Boosting microcirculation, through gentle stimulation of subcutaneous blood and lymphatic flow.
  • Reviving cellular activity, by engaging the connective tissue and strengthening the skin’s elastic network.

2- Anti-cellulite brushing technique

Anti-cellulite brushing can be done daily during an intensive phase, then two to three times a week for maintenance. Sessions are short, taking just 5 to 10 minutes. It is best to brush before showering, on dry skin, then rinse and nourish the skin with an oil (such as our Dry Oil) or a cream (such as our Cryo Cellulite Cream).

Anti-cellulite brushing should activate fluid circulation, so it is essential to follow a specific direction:

  • Start from the extremities (hands and feet) and work upward toward the lymph nodes. The most accessible lymph nodes are located at the neck, armpit, groin crease, back of the knee and inner elbow.
  • Anti-cellulite brushing should combine gentle circular movements (around the lymph nodes near the neck and collarbones, and over the stomach), with long smoothing strokes (from hands up to shoulders, from feet up to the buttocks, from the lower back up to the nape of the neck).
  • Pressure should be moderate. Brushing should be firm, without being harsh on the skin. This is not about scrubbing, but rather massaging — to encourage circulation, stimulate nerve endings and help the skin shed dead cells.

What are the effects of an anti-cellulite brush?

As explained above, with consistent use of an anti-cellulite brush, you can expect real results:

  • On cellulite: skin feels firmer and the appearance of cellulite is visibly improved (fewer bumps and dimples typical of orange-peel skin).
  • On circulation: if you are prone to water retention, uncomfortable end-of-day puffiness or the feeling of heavy legs, using an anti-cellulite brush should noticeably contribute to your sense of wellbeing. You can expect a reduction in the swollen appearance of your legs and thighs.
  • On skin quality: freed from dead cells and gently exfoliated, skin should gain in tone and radiance!
  • On your energy levels: anti-cellulite brushing, and dry brushing in general, helps stimulate energy points, tendons and muscles. It is both a relaxing and invigorating massage that delivers a genuine sense of wellbeing.
