Citrus fruits and spices have earned a strong reputation: they’re said to be antioxidant-rich, great for your health, and may even help you slim down thanks to their so-called “fat-burning” effect. Among the most frequently mentioned, cumin and lemon consistently top the list of best foods for weight management. But what’s the reality? Could the lemon and cumin combination truly be the answer to getting back in shape — and achieving a flat stomach in the process?

The benefits of lemon

Many lemon, that delightfully tangy little citrus fruit, is credited with numerous health benefits. Yet many of these claims remain unproven. So how do we separate fact from fiction? Can lemon genuinely help reduce belly fat? Science sheds some light on its potential benefits:

  • studies in animals have observed positive effects of lemon polyphenols on weight and adipose tissue. The antioxidant compounds found in this citrus fruit may indeed have a hypolipidaemic action, by slowing the absorption of dietary fats by the body(1) ;
  • lemon may also support digestion, by promoting the body’s natural detoxification and healthy liver function(2) ;
  • lemon compounds may also display hypoglycaemic effects, by slowing the absorption of dietary sugars(3).

To make the most of lemon’s benefits and work towards a flat stomach, it would therefore be advisable to consume it regularly, particularly at mealtimes.

The benefits of cumin

Now let’s turn to cumin. First, it’s worth drawing a distinction between:

  • cumin (Cuminum cyminum), also known as false anise, which produces the small brown seeds and ground cumin powder used to flavour many Middle Eastern and Asian dishes;
  • black cumin (Nigella sativa), also called nigella, which consists of small black seeds with a bold, peppery and pungent flavour.

When it comes to “true” cumin, its benefits are well established: it acts as a stimulant for digestion and bowel transit, by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes and bile. Its antioxidant compounds may also have a reducing effect on cholesterol and blood sugar levels(4).

When it comes to black cumin, it is recognised for its anti-obesity effects, as it acts as a regulator of blood glucose and lipid levels. It may also have protective effects on the liver and, more broadly, on the digestive system(5).

It therefore appears that, much like lemon, both cumin and black cumin could be recommended as spices to incorporate into your routine when looking to reduce belly fat, thanks to their influence on the digestive process.

How to use lemon and cumin for a flat stomach?

The most straightforward approach is perhaps the most natural one: simply include both ingredients in your everyday diet by seasoning your dishes with lemon and cumin. That way, alongside enjoying their wonderful flavours, you’ll benefit from their positive effects on digestion and transit.

That said, there are other ways to use them, particularly to prepare drinks :

  • as a slimming herbal tea – simply steep 1 tsp of cumin seeds in a cup of boiling water, add the juice of one lemon, and drink at the end of a meal;
  • as a slimming smoothie – you could for example blend orange, lemon, carrot, ginger and cumin into a delicious “fat-burning ” smoothie;
  • as a detox water – in a litre of water, steep 1 tsp of cumin seeds, a few slices of lemon and lime, some rounds of cucumber and a few mint leaves, then sip throughout the day.
