Grapefruit essential oil: effective against cellulite?

Huile essentielle pamplemousse cellulite

You love natural remedies and swear by essential oils. But did you know that some of them can actually help with cellulite? Here’s everything you need to know about the benefits of grapefruit essential oil, its anti-cellulite properties, and a few DIY recipes to try at home!

What is grapefruit essential oil?

An essential oil is a concentrated liquid plant essence, typically obtained by distilling the aromatic compounds of a plant. In the case of grapefruit and other citrus fruits, the essential oil is extracted by cold-pressing the fruit’s peel.

The aromatic compounds found in essential oils form a complex and highly potent blend of chemical molecules with a wide range of properties. An essential oil can act on the body (healing, soothing, antiseptic…), on the surrounding air (deodorising, purifying, invigorating…) and even on mood (energising, relaxing, calming…). In the specific case of grapefruit essential oil, its properties are truly versatile. It can be used for health, well-being, and beauty purposes.

What are the benefits of grapefruit essential oil?

Grapefruit essential oil offers a wealth of benefits.

First of all, it can be diffused at home to purify the air and lift the mood. But it can also have a positive effect on your state of mind:

  • It is relaxing and promotes restful sleep
  • Its zesty scent is uplifting and playful
  • It can also be comforting during low moments, as its fragrance is evocative of sunshine

Grapefruit essential oil can also be used as a beauty treatment. For example:

  • It can be incorporated into a toner for oily skin, thanks to its astringent properties.
  • It is also excellent for stimulating the scalp and helping to combat hair loss.

Finally, on the health side, the key benefits of grapefruit essential oil include:

  • Its draining qualities, as it helps to detoxify the body and support the natural elimination of waste (liver, kidneys).
  • Its digestive properties, as it supports digestion by relieving the liver, easing bloating and soothing digestive discomfort.
  • Its lipolytic action, as it boosts the breakdown of fats.

How to use grapefruit essential oil against cellulite?

As you can see, the combined draining and lipolytic action of grapefruit essential oil makes it a highly effective EO to incorporate into your daily routine when dealing with cellulite. Applied topically, grapefruit essential oil targets two of the main factors behind cellulite:

  • It supports the body’s detoxification process, helping to address water retention, which is directly linked to the development of water-retention cellulite.
  • Its lipolytic effect helps to encourage the emptying of adipocytes. These fat-laden cells are precisely what give cellulite its characteristic “orange peel” appearance — the bumpy skin texture typical of adipose cellulite and fibrous cellulite.

Struggling with cellulite and keen to use grapefruit essential oil every day to smooth away those stubborn dimples ? Here are a few recipes to get you started! Note that for these DIY blends, it’s best to use furocoumarin-free grapefruit EO, as citrus essential oils are naturally photosensitising. If not, avoid sun exposure while using them.

1- Toning anti-cellulite oil

To make this homemade recipe, you will need:

  • 35 drops of grapefruit essential oil
  • 35 drops of menthol eucalyptus essential oil
  • 35 drops of Virginia cedarwood essential oil
  • 30 ml of your choice of carrier oil (jojoba for fast absorption and a dry finish, borage for those dealing with water retention, sesame for those who enjoy palpate-roll massage !)

Simply pour all the liquids into your chosen bottle (a pump bottle is the best option!), blend well, and apply your toning oil every day to the areas you wish to treat — buttocks, hips, thighs, knees…

2- Anti-cellulite body scrub

Grapefruit essential oil can also be used to make an anti-cellulite body scrub. It can be used several times a week before showering to target cellulite, whatever its type. To prepare it, you will need:

  • 4 tbsp of coffee grounds
  • 4 tbsp of your choice of carrier oil — whatever you have in your kitchen will work perfectly!
  • 2 tbsp of brown sugar
  • A few drops of grapefruit essential oil

To make your anti-cellulite scrub, simply mix all the ingredients together until you get a smooth, slightly grainy paste. Before your shower, massage each area you wish to treat with a small amount of the mixture using circular and smoothing movements. Start from the lower body and work upwards towards the heart. Then rinse off. Toning results and silky-smooth skin guaranteed!

3- Anti-cellulite treatment course

Some essential oils can be taken orally. Grapefruit essential oil is one of them. That said, always respect the recommended dosages, as essential oils are extremely potent ingredients!

To carry out your detox and anti-cellulite course, simply mix 40 drops of juniper essential oil with 80 drops of grapefruit essential oil in a bottle. Place 2 drops of this blend, morning and evening, in a teaspoon of oil, and swallow. Follow this anti-cellulite course for 4 weeks.
