Lemon essential oil and cellulite: what we know

Lemon essential oil and cellulite: what we know
Contents

Cellulite is a completely normal physical trait, but when it becomes more pronounced it can affect your confidence. Among the natural steps that can complement your beauty routine, lemon essential oil may be worth considering, provided it is not used carelessly. This article explains what it is credited with, when it is best avoided, why internal use requires advice from a doctor or pharmacist, how to prepare a massage oil and why patience is important.

The properties of lemon essential oil

Lemon essential oil can be used in several ways, provided you always follow the necessary precautions. Its fresh, zesty scent is particularly valued. Applied to the skin diluted in a carrier oil, it can easily be incorporated into a massage routine, and its pleasant fragrance makes the moment more enjoyable.

It can be used in massage, always diluted. Any internal use requires the advice of a doctor or pharmacist. This essential oil contains a high concentration of limonene — a molecule found naturally in its composition. Cellulite is also a common phenomenon, and its appearance can vary from one area of the body to another.

Lemon essential oil can also have a place in a daily skincare routine, alongside a varied diet, good hydration and regular physical activity. Used diluted in a massage, it adds a fragrant touch to your routine — provided you follow the necessary precautions to enjoy it safely.

When should you avoid using it?

The qualities of lemon essential oil should not make us overlook the essential precautions to take before using such a concentrated product for cosmetic purposes. Like most essential oils, lemon essential oil should never be used neat. It must always be diluted beforehand in a carrier oil, and any internal use must be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist first.

Because of its high concentration, this essential oil is not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first three months, or for babies, whose skin barrier is not yet sufficiently protective. If you are pregnant or have any concerns, ask your doctor for advice before using lemon essential oil.

For topical application, always dilute your preparation as much as possible. This oil is also photosensitising — sun exposure or UV tanning beds should be avoided for at least 8 hours after application to prevent the risk of pigmentation marks and burns.

How to use lemon essential oil?

If you want to use lemon essential oil as part of your routine, you may sometimes read that it is suitable for internal or dietary use. Never follow this type of advice on your own: an essential oil is a highly concentrated product that is not suitable for everyone. Before considering any internal use, always ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

The pinch-and-roll massage with essential oil

Lemon essential oil can be used in a topical massage on areas where orange-peel skin is visible. However, it must be diluted in a carrier oil such as evening primrose or borage oil. A neutral carrier oil also works well, such as apricot, sweet almond, argan or hazelnut oil.

To prepare a suitable massage oil, mix:

  • 20 ml borage oil
  • 10 ml argan oil
  • 25 drops lemon essential oil
  • 25 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil

Take a few drops in the palm of your hands and massage the thighs and buttocks using a pinch-and-roll technique. This method involves grasping a fold of skin between your fingers and gently rolling it. Practise this massage for around ten minutes, twice a week, and do not rinse off the oil.

If you choose topical application, avoid massaging in summer if you plan to spend time in the sun. If you wish to continue your massages, rinse off the oil in the shower before going outside, or perform your massage in the evening.

How much patience does it take?

Lemon essential oil can be a pleasant step in your anti-cellulite routine. That said, used alone it is no substitute for a balanced lifestyle. Ideally, it should be combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Everyone’s experience is different — some people settle into a routine that suits them within a few weeks, while others take longer.

Don’t be discouraged if it takes you longer than others to settle into a routine that works for you. A few simple daily habits can help:

  • drink two litres of water a day,
  • take the stairs whenever you can to tone your muscles,
  • walk instead of taking the car…

Find the rhythm that works for you to take care of your skin every day!

Frequently asked questions

Which carrier oil should you choose to dilute lemon essential oil?

You can dilute it in a carrier oil such as evening primrose or borage oil, or in another neutral oil such as apricot, sweet almond, argan or hazelnut oil. The massage recipe above pairs borage oil with argan oil.

Can you apply lemon essential oil neat to the skin?

No. Like most essential oils, lemon essential oil should always be diluted, whatever the method of use. For a massage, mix it with carrier oils, as in the recipe combining borage oil, argan oil and essential oils.

Can you go out in the sun after a massage with lemon essential oil?

Best not: the oil is photosensitising. Wait at least 8 hours, massage in the evening or rinse the oil off before heading out.

Can you use lemon essential oil during pregnancy?

It is best avoided, especially in the first trimester. If you are expecting, check with your doctor first.

Is lemon essential oil enough on its own?

No. Used diluted in a massage, it can form part of a balanced skincare routine alongside a varied diet, physical activity and simple daily habits such as drinking water, taking the stairs or walking.
