Elevating your legs: finding a comfortable position

Rest your calves on a broad cushion and get your back comfortable first. You can adjust from there, keeping your knees relaxed without aiming for a set height.

Contents

Place a broad cushion under your calves rather than a small, firm support directly behind your knees. Get your back comfortable first, then adjust the cushion until your legs rest easily. You should not need to tense your thighs or hold your feet in place.

You do not need to aim for a particular height. What matters is feeling settled, with no pain, tingling or tension in your back.

Where should you place the cushions?

Support your calves along their length

Rest both calves on a broad cushion. This spreads pressure more evenly than a small cushion with an edge that presses into one area. If you keep having to balance your legs, adjust the support.

Keep firm edges away from the hollow behind your knees. If you feel pressure there, move the cushion towards your calves or try a different shape. Let your knees relax rather than forcing them completely straight.

Check your ankles and heels too

Your heels may rest on the cushion or extend slightly beyond it, depending on its length. Either can work. Make sure your ankles are not held at an uncomfortable angle and your heels are not under unpleasant pressure.

If one spot feels pressed, spread the support further along your lower legs. A cushion that flattens completely or slips can leave you holding your legs in place. Adjust it before adding more height.

Getting comfortable on the sofa or in bed

Make room on the sofa

If your sofa is long enough, lie down with your head and back supported, then rest your calves on the cushion. Check how your neck feels: a large stack of cushions behind your head can make it harder to relax, even when your legs are comfortable.

If you prefer to sit up, put the cushion on a stable footrest. Bring it close enough that you can reach it without sliding your pelvis forwards or slumping. The edge of the sofa should not press uncomfortably under your thighs.

In bed, start with one cushion

Place it under your calves and adjust its position and thickness until you feel comfortable. If you notice pulling around your pelvis, tension in your knees or discomfort in your back, lower the support or move it.

What feels good during a short break may not suit you for a whole night. You do not have to sleep this way, and you can change position whenever you need to.

How can you tell whether the position suits you?

Once you are settled, let your legs relax and notice any pressure. Adjust one thing at a time, whether that is the cushion’s position, its thickness or your back support. You will find it easier to tell which change helps.

What you feel An adjustment to try
Firm pressure behind your knee Move the cushion under your calves and keep any firm edge away from the hollow behind your knee.
You have to hold your legs in place Use a broader support or make the cushion more stable.
Tension in your back Adjust your back support and lower the cushion under your legs.
Uncomfortable pressure under your heels Spread the support further along your lower legs.

There is no need to put up with discomfort. Change position if you need to; adding more cushions will not necessarily help.

Resting your legs: what it can and cannot do

In its advice on swollen ankles and legs, the NHS suggests raising your legs on a chair or cushions when you can. It also recommends walking and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing still. Elevating your legs may help ease some swelling, but it does not identify or treat every possible cause.

The cushions take the weight of your legs, so your muscles do not have to hold them in the air. This is different from the active leg raises in our article on exercises for heavy legs.

You can add a few gentle ankle movements during your break if they feel comfortable, then get back to moving around as usual. Avoid staying still for a long time. Our guide to heavy legs has more on fitting this into your everyday habits.

Applying skincare before you rest

If your skin needs moisture, you can apply a body care product before settling down. According to its French product page, Crème Hydratante Monoï moisturises and nourishes the skin. The page recommends daily application to clean, dry skin, with circular movements over the body, and describes a texture that absorbs quickly. These details refer to the French product, not a local product offer.

The cream is for your skin and makes no claims of effectiveness for circulation, oedema or thrombosis. Its monoï fragrance may not suit reactive skin. Avoid firm massage over a sensitive area when applying skincare. You can read more in our article on massage and heavy legs.

When is adjusting the cushions not enough?

If swelling lasts several days, gets worse or keeps returning, seek medical advice. Our article on the possible causes of heavy legs offers background, but cannot help you diagnose yourself.

Seek medical advice promptly if just one leg swells for no known reason, or if the swelling is sudden, severe, painful, red or hot. Do not massage the area. The NHS notes that pain and swelling in one leg can be signs of deep vein thrombosis. If you also have shortness of breath or chest pain, call emergency services. In France, call 15 or 112.

Practical questions

How many cushions do you need?

Start with one. There is no required number, so add support only if it helps you feel more stable and comfortable without creating tension.

Should you keep your legs elevated for a set time?

You do not need to time a comfortable rest. Change position whenever you feel the need, and stop resting with your legs elevated if it becomes uncomfortable.
