You love taking the time for a proper breakfast in the morning. But you’re in a rush, short on inspiration, or craving something new? Why not try the bowl cake trend? You can even prepare it the night before to save precious time in the morning. Here are a few recipes, with a slimming twist.
What is a bowl cake?
The bowl cake is the bigger cousin of the mug cake. It’s essentially an express cake: prepared in just a few stirs, by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl and cooking the mixture in the microwave. Once baked and turned out, simply top it with a few fresh fruits, some honey or maple syrup, and you’re done. The preparation is ultra-quick, easy and wonderfully indulgent!
Traditionally, the bowl cake is enjoyed at breakfast. It’s made with everyday breakfast staples – grains such as rolled oats, muesli, chia seeds or granola, milk (dairy or plant-based) – to which you add an egg and a little baking powder. But the recipe can be enriched with a whole host of other ingredients: banana for energy, spirulina for the health-conscious, chocolate chips for the indulgent, spices for an exotic twist… The variations are endless and suit every taste. There are even recipes adapted for vegans and those with gluten intolerance. The best part: it’s fun, filling and nutritious. Perfect when you’re watching your figure…
And the bowl cake, riding on its success and practicality, also lends itself to other meals, with some very appealing savoury versions!
