If you’ve decided to take on your cellulite, you’ve probably heard of the famous pinch-and-roll massage. What is it, why does it work, and how do you do it? We tell you everything about this must-know technique!
What is the pinch-and-roll massage?
The pinch-and-roll is a type of massage specifically designed for eliminating cellulite, and let’s be honest — it’s not a relaxing massage! This technique involves firmly kneading the skin to reach the deeper tissues and stimulate the lipolysis process, meaning the release of fats and toxins stored in fat cells.
The pinch-and-roll also helps boost healthy blood and lymphatic circulation, which further contributes to flushing out waste and fats. It works to break down the fat cells responsible for cellulite.
The pinch-and-roll massage can be performed on any area of the body affected by cellulite:
- Stomach and Hips
- Thighs and Buttocks
Why is it the best method against cellulite?
- Pinch-and-roll massages have been recognised for years by health and beauty professionals as THE go-to method in the fight against cellulite.
- It is the most effective way to reach subcutaneous fat deposits. Unlike surface-level treatments, this type of massage works to dislodge deeply stored fat responsible for the dimpled appearance.
- It is a natural and effective method against all types of cellulite.
- The pinch-and-roll is currently the only effective action that durably targets the disappearance of cellulite and, consequently, the orange-peel skin texture.
This scientifically backed method works on 3 different and complementary levels to tackle cellulite:
1 – Kneading
Through the kneading action, the pinch-and-roll softens the skin and works deep into the tissue. This movement helps to decongest the cutaneous layers.
2 – Skin lifting
Broad, sweeping movements help to lift and separate the tissue. Blood and lymphatic circulation are activated.
3 – Drainage
The slow, deep movement helps eliminate toxins and effectively address water retention. After dislodging fats from the adipocytes, this final movement helps flush them out for good through its draining action.
What about mechanical pinch-and-roll?
There are two ways to perform a pinch-and-roll massage: the manual technique, as described above, and the mechanical technique. The latter uses a machine instead of a physiotherapist’s or masseur’s hands. It replicates the classic movement of the manual pinch-and-roll. Mechanical pinch-and-roll is generally offered in beauty institutes and requires several sessions to be effective.
The principle is almost always the same: the machine is fitted with a suction chamber and one or more rollers. The skin is lifted and drawn into the suction chamber, while the roller(s) simulate a rolling motion. Some machines are more advanced and offer:
- Ionisation, to deliver active skincare ingredients deep into the skin
- A thermal effect, often through heat diffusion, to encourage fat release from adipocytes and boost microcirculation
- Sensors, to adjust the stimulation intensity based on skin sensitivity or the area being treated
Results become visible after around ten sessions: skin texture improves, cellulite is reduced and the silhouette is reshaped. However, it does require a budget: a 35 to 45-minute session costs between €50 and €60, depending on the institute and the machine used. On top of that, mechanical pinch-and-roll sessions need to be repeated regularly. As the saying goes, old habits die hard — and cellulite is no different: once emptied, adipocytes are “programmed” to store fat again.
Finally, there are devices available for performing a mechanical pinch-and-roll massage at home. Less expensive than a course of treatment at an institute, they are also less powerful. That said, they can be useful for treating mild cellulite or as a complement to sessions with a physiotherapist or at a beauty institute.
Pinch-and-roll at a salon or at home?
The pinch-and-roll can be performed at a beauty institute, but also at home. The advantage of salon sessions is that the massage is carried out by someone else, making it more effective than doing it on yourself by hand. However, sessions are often expensive and need to be very frequent.
While it’s true that performing the pinch-and-roll on your own body manually can quickly become tricky, it is absolutely possible to do massage sessions at home, alone, easily and quickly… Thanks to the Cellublue Cup! The cup perfectly replicates the pinch-and-roll through its suction effect. This simple technique is far more affordable than salon sessions, and just as effective.
Is the pinch-and-roll enough to get rid of cellulite?

That said, keep in mind that to prevent cellulite from coming back and excess fat from building up, it’s advisable to maintain a balanced diet and stay active. In practice, if you use your Cellublue Cup every day but eat 4 pizzas a week, the pinch-and-roll is going to struggle to make a difference! Makes sense, right?
Can I use this method?
The pinch-and-roll is effective regardless of your cellulite type: aqueous, fibrous or adipose. However, there are cases where this method may not be suitable for you.
This method is not recommended if you have:
- recent stretch marks (pink/red),
- varicose veins,
- wounds, burns, skin lesions or allergies
- significant venous issues (phlebitis, oedema…),
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding,
Always consult your doctor before starting a pinch-and-roll routine.
So, are you convinced by the power of the pinch-and-roll?
