What exactly is a calorie?

To function properly, the body needs energy — measured in calories. This is what’s known as caloric intake.

To balance your diet, it’s important to assess the energy intake your body needs to function well. Ideally, this evaluation should be done over the course of about a week, to get a clear picture of the relationship between calories consumed and energy expended. To slim down, you logically need to burn more calories than you take in. Do the opposite, and those extra calories get stored — and turn into fat.

The number of calories your body needs to function well varies enormously from one person to the next. You’ll need to factor in your professional activity, your physical activity, your age, your basal metabolic rate…

The goal, then, is to give your body exactly the calories it needs — no more, no less — by carefully choosing what you eat each day. Some foods are calorie-dense but genuinely great for your body. Take the avocado: it’s a fantastic source of antioxidants, vitamins and healthy fats. Even though an avocado has roughly the same calorie count as an ice cream bar, the energy it provides is far more nourishing!
