Fragrance and Active Ingredients in Body Care: What Do They Do?

Fragrance gives body care its scent, while skincare ingredients serve different functions. In Crème Hydratante Monoï, monoï refers to the scent, not an oil in the formula.

Fragrance gives a cosmetic product its scent; an active ingredient is highlighted for a specific skincare function. A pleasant scent therefore does not prove that a product is moisturising or nourishing. In the French product Crème Hydratante Monoï, monoï refers to the fragrance: the ingredient list includes PARFUM, but no monoï oil.

When choosing a body care product, it helps to separate two questions: do you like the scent, and what functions is the formula intended to perform? These two aspects complement each other, but they are not interchangeable.

Fragrance enhances the experience without explaining the product’s effectiveness

A scent can make application more enjoyable. It contributes to the product experience, alongside its texture and the feeling it leaves on the skin. You may like a sunny, beach-inspired scent, prefer something subtle or look for fragrance-free body care, depending on your preferences.

The term “active ingredient” generally refers to an ingredient selected and presented for a skincare property. To explore this idea further, see our article on the role of a cosmetic active ingredient. The essential point is simple: the scent of an ingredient does not prove either its presence or its action in a formula.

What you observe What it tells you
A monoï scent A fragrance identity, not necessarily monoï oil.
The mention PARFUM The presence of a fragrance composition, without giving the full details of how it is assembled under this single term.
An identified skincare ingredient Its presence in the formula; the product’s effect cannot be inferred from its scent.
A pleasant texture A sensory characteristic separate from the fragrance and the product’s skincare functions.

PARFUM in this cream: what the term means

Article 19 of the European Cosmetics Regulation provides that fragrance and aromatic compositions, as well as their raw materials, be designated by the terms “parfum” or “aroma”. Certain substances must also be listed separately when required by the regulations.

PARFUM is therefore not the name of a specific vegetable oil. On its own, this mention does not tell you how a scent was created, nor does it indicate a nourishing property.

Monoï: a scent, not an oil in this formula

The French manufacturer’s page for Crème Hydratante Monoï presents it as a body cream with a monoï fragrance. Its ingredient list includes sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, chamomile extract and PARFUM, among others. It does not mention monoï oil.

“Monoï” should therefore be understood as a scent description for this product, not as an announcement that it contains an oily ingredient. To distinguish this olfactory aspect from lipid-based ingredients, our article on plant oils used in body care looks at this other family of ingredients.

Different roles within the same product

Cellublue presents sweet almond oil as helping to keep the skin supple, and chamomile extract as helping to soften it. The brand attributes a protective function to vitamin E, helping protect the formula from oxidation. These descriptions come from the manufacturer; they are not properties that should be attributed to the monoï fragrance.

This distinction also prevents us from treating every ingredient as an “active ingredient for the skin”. Some contribute to the product’s preservation or stability, while others affect how pleasant it is to use.

How to choose body care without confusing scent, texture and function

Start with your needs: are you looking for a body care product presented as moisturising, a particular skin feel or mainly a scent you enjoy? Then assess these criteria separately.

  • For the skincare function: check the product information and the ingredients the manufacturer associates with that function.
  • For the fragrance: focus on the scent you prefer, without treating it as an indicator of effectiveness.
  • For the texture: distinguish how easily the product spreads and the finish it leaves on the skin from its scent.

The French product page describes Crème Hydratante Monoï as having a melting texture that absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy feeling. This is a characteristic stated by the brand and is separate from the cream’s scent. If you are more interested in the feel of a cream or oil, our article on the texture of a dry oil covers this other point of comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stronger scent mean that a product contains more active ingredients?

No. The perceived intensity of a fragrance does not tell you how much of the skincare ingredients a product contains or what effect they have.

Does PARFUM tell you where the scent comes from?

Not on its own. The term refers to the fragrance composition, without detailing the origin of each raw material under this single designation.
