What is a cosmetic active ingredient and what is it used for?
A cosmetic active ingredient is an ingredient used in a product to give it specific properties. It is the essential component of the product, as it is what delivers its efficacy. That is why it is called an active ingredient — it is the one doing the work. For example, sweet almond oil provides nourishment to the skin.
Generally speaking, cosmetic actives make up a small portion of the formula and are supported by solvents (such as water) or ingredients that create the product’s texture.
Why do actives vary from one product to another?
Each active has specific actions. That is why, depending on the results desired, the actives differ. For instance, the actives in an anti-stretch mark oil are not the same as those in a slimming cream. Each active addresses a specific concern.
