Between endless meetings, back-to-back appointments, and shopping runs with colleagues that leave you with barely any time to eat, fitting in a proper lunch isn’t always easy. And yet, lunch is essential! It’s what gives you the energy to power through the rest of your workday and make it to dinner without those sudden urges to snack or give in to every treat that crosses your path. To master the art of lunchtime and keep your figure in check, here’s a list of mistakes you absolutely must avoid.
Mistake #1 at lunchtime: Eating too fast!

Catching a train? No? Then why are you rushing through your lunch like that? Wolfing down a meal in under 30 minutes is far from ideal for your figure or your stomach. The feeling of fullness only kicks in after about half an hour — so even if you eat quickly, it won’t arrive any sooner, and you’ll end up eating more. Simple as that! And the consequences on the scale and in the mirror won’t be pretty.
A tip to help you slow down: put your fork down between each bite. Swallowing food that’s barely been chewed leads to stomach aches, bloating, and that heavy feeling — none of which we want! So take your time.
Mistake #2 at lunchtime: Reaching for ready-made meals!

Long days, zero motivation to cook in the evening, and no lunch prepped for the next day? Sound familiar? The result: you end up grabbing a ready-made meal packed with additives, and usually too fatty, too sweet, and too salty. Not a great idea if you want to keep fitting into your favourite slim jeans! Try to avoid them as much as possible.
A tip for eating healthier and saving money (yes, ready-made meals are pricey!): at the end of the weekend, batch-cook a few wholesome dishes — you can even freeze some to last the week. Your wallet will thank you, and so will your jeans!
Mistake #3 at lunchtime: Skipping dessert!

Attention, food lovers: don’t skip dessert! Just because you think eating only a main course will leave you feeling satisfied and light doesn’t mean you’re right. Always keep that 30-minute rule in mind before fullness kicks in! So yes, you can treat yourself to a little something after lunch. Just be mindful of portions and choices. We’re not saying you should indulge in a coffee éclair or a strawberry tart every day — three mini desserts often add up to more than one! Instead, opt for a seasonal fruit, a plant-based yoghurt with dried fruit or berries, and occasionally allow yourself a small square of dark chocolate.
Mistake #4 at lunchtime: Eating in front of your computer!

This is probably one of the worst habits — and one many of us are guilty of, let’s be honest. We eat fast, too fast, without even enjoying what’s on our plate. Time to stop! You’ve been staring at a screen since morning — give your mind a break! Step away from your computer, get some fresh air, take a short 10–15 minute walk. That little reset will do you the world of good. You’ll feel like you’ve had a real break before getting back to work, and you’ll enjoy your lunch so much more. Not sure why you’d venture out in the cold? There are plenty of reasons — to stretch your legs, do a bit of shopping (always a good excuse!), or catch up with a friend who works nearby. Go on, you’ve got this!
Mistake #5 at lunchtime: Drinking sugary beverages!

Who hasn’t been tempted to wash down lunch with a sweet drink or a soda — even a diet one? Big mistake! Let’s put those sneaky little pleasures aside. Loaded with sugar and empty calories, they disrupt digestion and do nothing to satisfy your hunger. Quite the opposite, in fact — you can count on craving a snack shortly after your meal. Nothing beats a large glass of still water at lunchtime. No bubbles, no sugar, no unnecessary calories — it ticks every box. If plain water starts to feel boring, add a squeeze of lemon. Deal? No more sugary drinks — are you with us?
Mistake #6 at lunchtime: Skipping lunch altogether!

Along with mistake #4, this one competes for the top spot on the podium of things to avoid! We often tell ourselves that skipping a meal is no big deal — even that it might do us good. Wrong! You’ll arrive at your next meal absolutely starving, having probably already caved to something sweet mid-afternoon. The result: you’ll eat far too much at a time of day when your body is winding down and less likely to burn it off. So once again, break this bad habit! It does you no favours and will have you falling out with your mirror and your scales. Especially as spring approaches — that’s simply not an option!
